National Stalking Awareness Week |
||
|
Today marks the final day of Stalking Awareness Week.
Stalking can be defined as a repeated pattern of unwanted attention, contact or harassment directed to another that causes fear or distress. Stalking, more so than the similar offence of harassment, is often characterised by fixated and obsessive behaviours.
Stalkers can be partners, ex-partners, associates, neighbours or even complete strangers.
Last month, a 56-year-old man from Sidmouth was convicted of stalking his next-door neighbours following an investigation by the Neighbourhood Police Team. The man was accused of the following behaviours: These behaviours spanned a period of several months. The man was initially arrested and given strict bail conditions to protect the victims in the case.
The victims kept a detailed diary where they recorded incidents of unwanted contact from their neighbour. This evidence proved invaluable in court.
The man was found guilty of one count of stalking. He received fines and court costs exceeding £2000. He was also issued with restraining orders to protect the victims. He was acquitted of stalking another neighbour, but received a restraining order on acquittal.
The offender has not been named in this post out of respect for the victims' privacy. The Neighbourhood Police Team continue to work with partner agencies to try and improve the quality of life for all those affected.
If you believe you, a friend or relative have been a victim of stalking or harassment, please report it to police. Further guidance on reporting can be found using the following link - How to report stalking or harassment | Devon & Cornwall Police
